Our class was assigned to make a kite after reading The Kite Runner. Our team had James, Juhun, Kyle, and Kevin. The kite represents a real competition held annually in Afghanistan. In the story, the main character, Amir and his servant, Hassan enter the contest. After the contest, Hassan went to find Amir’s kite, and he was raped by Assef. Amir watched the whole thing, but he didn’t help Hassan and just ran away, and the relation between Hassan and Amir widened, and it was a great turning point of this book. We had to make four partitions in the kite, and write characters, turning points, symbols, and theme. Also, we needed to make tails that attached to it. We went to Modern Supply to grab some materials. We used thin wooden sticks for the frame, paper for wings, and rope for decoration. Kevin wrote about the turning points, and Juhun wrote about theme. We used most of the time on writing the partitions, and we didn’t take long for making our kite. we feel that our kite was sucessful, because we could work on it with the people who we want to work with, and we didn’t have any conflicts. We decided to make the kite look like butterfly, because we felt that butterflys’ lives are similar to book’s story. Butterflys have their ugly youth, like people’s death and conflicts during story, but a butterfly becomes pretty, like happy ending of the story. There are four sections in the kite separated by the frame. Upper left part had theme, upper right part had turning points, lower left part had characters, and lower right part had symbols. We organized information in the order that group member finished.

Kevin- I really enjoyed this activity, because I always enjoyed to do art activities, such as drawing and designing. I was afraid a bit to make the kite, because I never tried to make this big scale of art, but there were three more people helping the activity, so I had more fun than hard times.

Juhun- While making our kite, I felt the responsibility and happiness at the same time. I was the one who had to buy all the materials, and one who gave most of the ideas for design. Even though I was responsible for those things, I had really fun time, because I could work with the people who I wanted to work with.
