This week, Michael, TaeJeong, HyeonJoon, and I worked on a project for The Kite Runner. This was a project where we needed to create one kite with drawings and information from the book- theme, character, turning points, symbols, and basic summaries for the three main time periods from the book. The class was assigned to create a kite with all these information because there was a kite flying contest in the book in which Amir and Hassan, the main characters, joined. The “kite” is the most important symbol from the book because after the contest, Hassan got raped by Assef, but Amir ignored it although he saw his best friend get raped. This was the start of Hassan moving away and Amir’s major guilt that he had to carry with him his whole life. Also, at the end of the book, Amir rescues Sohrab, Hassan’s son, and brings him to America. Sohrab did not speak for a long time, but one day, Amir started to fly a kite, and that was the day Sohrab spoke again.

Working with my group was interesting. We constantly kept changing ideas for what shape the kite will have. However, we narrowed down our ideas to a 3D quad-pyramid type of design. We thought it would best separate the different information we had. Also, by doing this design, we were able to make all four pyramids a different color. We used red for betrayal, orange for regret, blue for his new life in San Francisco (restarting), and green for growth in when Amir grew physically and mentally in the story. I was in charge of writing about the character, and I chose to write about Sohrab because he changed himself, but he also changed some other main characters around him in the story. The reason why our kite has a picture of Audrey Hepburn is because we connected Sohrab to her since she also had depression and all she wanted was to have her normal, quiet life with her family, just like Sohrab when all he wanted was to have a happy life with his parents beside him. I feel like our kite was well made and unique although we had a pretty hard time in making everyone agree with all choices along the way.
