"He still felt her absence; it was like waking up one day with no teeth in your mouth. You wouldn’t need to run to the mirror to know they were gone."

-James Dashner's words from chapter 7 of The Scorch Trials

describing Thomas's feelings when he found out Teresa was missing

I recently read a book titled The Scorch Trials, written by James Dashner, to take an AR quiz. This is the second book of the famous Maze Runner Saga. I started reading this book after I finished the first book of the series, The Maze Runner. I thought it was a really nice post-apocalyptic, dystopian science fiction novel to read.

The book starts off as Thomas, the main character, and his Glader friends move into a dormitory. They think they are living away from dangers similar to those they faced in The Maze before they finally escaped. However, they find out WICKED has new plans for them- a second test. The Gladers are all put into a city they call the Scorch and cannot leave until they travel across the city to the point where the "secure spot" is to then receive the cure for a virus called the Flare. During their days at the Scorch, Thomas and the Gladers go through many challenges, including him seeing his friend, Teresa, but being betrayed by her.

The Scorch Trials is all about the Gladers facing adventurous challenges set by a "controller" (WICKED). Readers can make many different connections to scenes from the story to scenes from The Kite Runner when Hassan gets betrayed by Amir. Amir noticed Hassan getting raped, but he did not try to help him. I can relate this to when Teresa betrayed Thomas and the Gladers, even though Thomas thought they were close friends.

I personally think that this is an extraordinary book to read. It kept my interest the whole time I was reading it. It is an extremely exciting book that keeps readers wondering what danger the Gladers are going to have to face next. Also, I would recommend The Scorch Trials to people who have watched the movie that came out in 2015. There are many scenes that are different from the book in the movie, and I think readers would want to see the details that were missed in the movie.
